Have a look at this fascinating tour into Russia’s largest prison, Vladimir Central. And it’s one with a long and dark history.
The walls of this jail are old and famous, having held Stalin’s son, and also one of the new confessors of Russia, Saint Athanasius the Confessor. There is a church now where he was imprisoned by the Bolsheviks.
The prison was long used by the Communist regime for locking away its opponents, holding “spies, saboteurs, terrorists, Trotskyites, Mensheviks, Socialist-Revolutionaries, anarchists, ethnic nationalists, white émigrés, participants in other anti-Soviet organizations” and innocents simply caught up in purges.
Nowadays, part of the prison has been turned into a museum.
